Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Acute Care

The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care (PNP-AC) concentration at LSU Health Sciences Centerís School of Nursing is the first in Louisiana and the only one within an Academic Health Center!

This concentration is within the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program and includes a three-year plan of study preparing graduate nursing students to care for children with complex chronic, acute, and critical illnesses across the entire pediatric age spectrum (from birth to adulthood). The PNP-AC plan of study immerses the student into a variety of clinical experiences and settings designed to develop the studentís competency in the complex management of pediatric patients who may be physiologically unstable, technologically dependent, or are highly vulnerable to complications in an effort to restore/maximize optimal health or provide palliative care.

In addition to the concentrated knowledge and training of advanced nursing care of pediatric populations with complex illnesses, the student will be prepared to integrate DNP competencies into PNP-AC practice. This means the student is prepared to lead the translation of research into practice in an effort to improve the timeliness, efficiency, and quality of practice and/or patient outcomes. Students will collaborate one-on-one with DNP faculty and PNP-AC practice mentors in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the studentís DNP project.
