Information
The master's degree program of study
is designed to educate qualified persons to contribute
to health care and to improve nursing practice.
It is based on undergraduate general education
and professional knowledge and upon the attitudes
and applied skills which evolve from the concept
that individuals are holistic beings. The content
includes the theory and practice of nursing; biological,
psychological, sociological, philosophical, cultural,
and environmental concepts related to health;
and the present and future roles of nursing in
health care. The curriculum is designed to prepare
graduates with advanced knowledge in select areas
of nursing and with competencies in advanced practice
nursing and research.
The Master of Nursing Degree
is a specialized professional degree similar to
others offered in the LSU System. The total number
of credits for the degree is between 38 and 46
semester hours. Students may attend full or part
time. A curriculum plan is designed by the student
and faculty advisor in accordance with the student's
educational goals and interests. Core courses
are required of students regardless of selected
area of nursing focus. The structure and content
of the curriculum are based on the rationale that
theory provides the conceptual basis for nursing
practice. Courses are arranged so that theory
and practice are presented concurrently. Courses
are classified under four major headings: Core,
Nursing Focus, Support Area and Electives.
