The Joel Bishop Nursing
Multimedia Center (NMC) serves as a
major learning resource environment
for the School of Nursing and is a member
of FITNE, Inc., an organization for
leaders in technology for health care
education. Located on the fifth floor
of the School of Nursing, the center
is a multifunctional teaching and learning
laboratory that provides an excellent
opportunity for independent learning,
self and mediated instruction, computer-based
instruction, and the practice of nursing
skills.
This special study
environment serves the students in the
School of Nursing by providing an excellent
opportunity for independent learning,
self and mediated instruction, computer-based
instruction, and the practice of nursing
skills. The Multimedia Center maintains
an extensive collection of learning
materials that enhances the learning
of problem solving and critical thinking,
and fosters skills acquisition. The
center offers opportunities for teaching
and learning in the cognitive, psychomotor
and affective domains.
Instructional
Media
Students learn at their own pace using
instructional media. Providing this
instruction are resources such as computer
assisted instruction software, including
new virtual reality simulation programs,
interactive video computer programs,
and, video and audiocassettes. The hardware
equipment necessary to support these
software holdings is available and located
in a large, open carrel area that has
varied patterns of workstations and
seats. In addition, flipcharts, independent
learning activities and modules are
available.
Skills
Laboratories
The learning of nursing skills, an essential
part of the curriculum, occurs in several
laboratories available for students
to practice basic and advanced nursing
skills during faculty supervised classes/demonstrations
and independent practice time. Students
can practice in the fifteen-bed hospital
simulation laboratory with each unit
consisting of an electric bed, bedside
table, over bed table, bedside chair,
hand washing facilities, and draw curtains.
This lab also includes a functional
intensive care head wall with suction,
oxygen and a heart monitor, emergency
and traditional medicine carts, and
a separate medication room with knee
gate hand washing facilities. Two smaller
laboratories provide flexible space
for a variety of lab experiences for
both individual and small group instruction,
e.g., IV therapy. Practice ranges from
simple bed making to advanced skills
in intensive care. The NMC has some
of the latest professional practice
materials and models.
The learning of specialized
and advanced practice skills is facilitated
by the IV Cath Simulator Lab and the
newly opened CRNA Lab. The IV Cath Sim
Lab has two Cath Sim Vascular Access
Simulators, which include a PC - based
program that facilitates practicing
and training in intravenous catheterization
procedures. The system combines interactive
multimedia instruction and 3 0- D simulation.
Various modules address different patient
prototypes in the pediatric, adult and
geriatric age populations, while giving
the user the visual, audio and tactile
elements of Iv therapy in the clinical
setting.
The newly opened CRNA
Lab is equipped with specialized training
equipment for nurse anesthesia and other
nursing students to assist with learning
advanced practice skills. Central to
the lab is a computer programmed human
patient simulator, a sophisticated training
mannequin that reacts to simulated medical
situations in real time. An Anesthesia
System complete with medical gases and
patient monitors compliments the simulator
for reality based instruction and practice.
In addition, adult intubation models
are available to students for practice.
This lab also houses the AccuTouch Endoscopy
Simulator for advance practitioner skill
development.
Additional services
offered by the center include mastery
based-testing and scoring that provides
immediate feedback to students, a secured
testing area for students, including
those students with special accommodations
in all testing situations, a computer
classroom set-up for small group computer
instruction classes and graduate student
access to statistical software, computers
and printers for students to utilize
for word processing and Internet access,
and educational pamphlets and literature
for patient teaching. A student lounge
is available for breaks.
Faculty
and Staff
The Nursing Multimedia Center (NMC)
faculty and staff provides supportive
services to departmental faculties and
students in the educational components
of the curriculum. The NMC faculty assists
in providing limited guidance and instruction
for students as they progress with assignments
in the NMC. In addition, the NMC faculty
serves as a resource for both faculties
and students, and acts as a liaison
between the NMC and individual courses
in the curriculum. With input from the
School of Nursing Curriculum Committee,
the NMC faculty identifies resources
appropriate to support and enhance the
curriculum, and meet specified outcomes
for students.
Integral to the functioning
of the center, staff provides assistance
in locating and using learning materials
and equipment in the NMC. Staff assists
in maintaining learning equipment and
supplies, and assembles needed resources
in setting-up lab experiences. In addition,
staff also grades and posts tests, and
maintains a test file record on each
student. Both faculty and staff provide
a formal orientation to the use of the
NMC for new students in the School of
Nursing.
The faculty and staff
work collaboratively with departmental
faculties and administration to provide
coordinated efforts in meeting learning
needs of students in the NMC. New technology
and learning materials are identified
and brought to the attention of all
faculties as a result of monitoring
and previewing media. Faculties participate
in the selection process of learning
materials for purchase and use in the
NMC.
The Computer Support
Staff assists students with the utilization
and troubleshooting of assigned computer
based support instruction/software,
as well as other resources available
to students on computers located in
the NMC. She also works with the School
of Nursing Computer Support personnel
on hardware troubleshooting and updates.
