Admission Criteria

  1. Completed on-line application through NursingCAS.

  2. A baccalaureate and a masterís degree in nursing from a college or university approved by a recognized national accrediting body.

  3. Official transcripts from a regionally accredited college or university documenting the award of a BSN or BSN equivalent* and a masterís degree. All previous undergraduate and graduate transcripts must be submitted. All nursing course credit earned must be from a specialized nursing accredited program.

    *A BSN equivalent does not meet admission requirement without the conferral of a Masterís degree.

    All transcripts from programs outside of the United States must be evaluated by an accredited credentialing evaluation service. LSU Health New Orleans (LSUHNO) School of Nursing recommends the following resources:

    Official transcripts must be submitted to the School of Nursing Office of Student Services/Affairs. An applicant may eScript: nsstuaffairs@lsuhsc.edu or mail: LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing, Office of Student Services/Affairs, 1900 Gravier Street, Room 321, New Orleans, LA 70112.

  4. A grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for all undergraduate and graduate course work reflected on transcripts.

  5. Official scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) of 300 (or higher) when combining the verbal and quantitative scores on the 130-170 score scale are required from within the last five (5) years. Writing score must be a 3.0 or higher from within the last five (5) years.

    GRE scores may be uploaded within the NursingCAS application. Official copies should be sent to LSUHNO School of Nursing. LSUHNO School of Nursing code is 6353.

  6. A minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for all applicants who have English as a second language or who are not graduates of programs in the United States. Input TOEFL scores and upload results within the NursingCAS application.

  7. A 1500 word statement that describes the applicant’s preliminary topics of research interest with a specified population of interest.  The statement should include a brief explanation of the state of the science in the topic, identification of a researchable problem, and a description of how the applicant would approach studying the problem. Upload within the NursingCAS application.

  8. Current CV or resume. Upload within the NursingCAS application.

  9. Three References in Support of Graduate Admission Application must be submitted by the application deadline. At least one recommendation must be from a peer and another from a current supervisor. The reference information will be requested within the NursingCAS application.

  10. Minimum of one year of post-graduate clinical nursing experience.

  11. A current unencumbered license to practice nursing in any state with eligibility for licensure in Louisiana.

  12. Successful completion of interview.
