Blood Drawing Tips

1. Prior to every access, always swab the top of the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve port with a sterile 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe (1-2 seconds) and allow to dry (approximately 30 seconds).
2. Connect a standard syringe or blood draw holder with adapter. For discard/waste guidelines, refer to facility protocol.
3. Draw required specimen.
4. Detach the syringe or blood draw holder with adapter.
5. Prior to every access, always swab the top of the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve port with a sterile 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe (1-2 seconds) and allow to dry (approximately 30 seconds).
6. Flush the valve and access line. Upon removal of a syringe from the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve, a positive displacement of fluid will occur to reduce retrograde flow into the catheter lumen.
7. Apply clamp after disconnecting the syringe.
