Helpful Hints

  1. Prior to every access, always swab the top of the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve port with a sterile 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe (1-2 seconds) and allow to dry (approximately 30 seconds).
  2. Replace set every 72 hours or 100 activations, whichever occurs first. For infusions of blood, blood products, or lipid emulsions, replace every 24 hours.
  3. Prime the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve prior to connecting it to the patient's catheter or extension set.
  4. Some medications may continue to be supplied in pre-filled syringes with non-removable needles. Please follow the recommendations below only when using a syringe with a non-removable needle.
  • The SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve will leak if punctured with a needle. In an emergency, a standard PRN adapter can be added to the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve to allow access with a needle
  • Ensure that when accessing the PRN adapter with a needle that the needle does not come in contact with the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve.
  • As a temporary measure for a punctured SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve, you can add an additional SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve onto the damaged/punctured SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve. However, once the integrity of the SmartSite® positive bolus needle-free valve has been compromised, it needs to be replaced.
