Title: Beyond the Bruises: Identifying and Intervening in Elder Abuse

Activity Description/Outcome: Abuse takes many forms financial, physical, neglect, spiritual, self-neglect, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking. Reportedly, one out of every ten elders over age 60 has suffered some form of abuse; the majority at the hands of family members. Healthcare providers in multiple settings encounter these vulnerable individuals, yet miss important opportunities to screen and intervene in potentially deadly situations. This learning activity will provide an overview of elder abuse, current societal trends that impact abuse, and tips and tools to help elders in these situations. Awareness, advocacy, and forensic implications will be discussed.

Target Audience: Registered Nurses who care for patients in any setting

Participants will earn 3.0 contact hours of continuing nursing education.
