What computer specifications does the School of Nursing recommend?

The computer should be an Intel Core processor system capable of running a Microsoft Windows Operating System. Windows 7 is the preferred operating system if purchasing a new computer. The computer system must be able to run Microsoft Office Professional 2010, and Internet Explorer version 9.0. The School of Nursing currently uses Microsoft Office 2010 Professional and stores files in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Outlook Web Access is used for student E-Mail. Students can download important files and obtain E-Mail through Internet Explorer version 9.0. (2011-2012)

What are the requirements to connect to the LSUHSC network?

Nursing students who elect to connect their computers to any port or wirelessly to the LSUHSC network are responsible for maintaining the following requirements:

  1. The computer configuration must be compatible with the LSUHSC network.
  2. The computer must be free of all viruses. If a computer has a virus, the student is responsible for removing the virus.
  3. The computer must be running reliable anti-virus software that is updated regularly.
  4. The computer must be kept up to date with all operating system security patches. The student is responsible for making sure that the security patches are installed.

I am using McAfee VirusScan. How do I update the virus definition (DAT) files and scan engine?

1. Right-click on the VirusScan taskbar icon (next to the clock) and choose "Update Now..." from the menu.


2. At this point, the software will scan for available updates.


3. After any available updates have completed the installation process, click the "Close" button.


 


How do I update my computer with the latest Microsoft security patches?

1. Open Internet Explorer and go to "Tools" and "Windows Update". If you do not use Internet Explorer, go to the following web address: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com


2. After you have reached the site, click on "Express Install".


3. Your computer will then be scanned for missing patches.


4. Any missing patches will be listed. Click "Install" to begin the installation process.

 


Does the LSUHSC have a computer usage policy I must comply with?

At all times, when using campus computers and resources, students must comply with Chancellor's Memoranda CM-42. Click here to view this document.

 


How do I access the library's website?

I can't open files with .docx or .pptx extensions.

If you have an older version of Microsoft Office and are having trouble opening files created with Microsoft Office 2007, you can download a compatibility pack at the following location: click here.

 


Where can I buy Microsoft Office at a discount?

Microsoft Office is available to LSUHSC students at a substantially discounted price at the bookstore in the Resource Building at 433 Bolivar Street. Please see the bookstore for exact pricing and details.

 


How do I print from my personal laptop to the Pay-for-Print system?

If you have a personal laptop and if your computer can access the LSUHSC-Secure wireless network, then you can download and install the printer driver for the Pay-for-Print printers located in the School of Nursing.

For PC:

  1. Logon to LSUHSC-Secure wireless network.
  2. Select your laptop's processor type: 32 bit | 64 bit
  3. Follow the prompts to download the printer driver and to install it.  You would install this printer driver in the same way you install other printer drivers on your laptop.
  4. When you are ready to print a file, choose the printer labeled, “Nursing on PPSVR-RCB.”
  5. Go to the printer release station to release your documents and pay for them.

For Mac:

  1. Connect to the LSUHSC-Secure wireless network
  2. Map a network share to the client installer
    1. In Finder, Click “Go” \ “Connect to server”
    2. Server Address: smb://ppsvr-rcb/mac
    3. Click “Connect”
    4. Provide LSUHSC username and password when prompted
    5. Click “Connect”
  3. Double-click “Nursing.dmg”
  4. Double-click “Popup.pkg”
  5. In the Popup Installer box:
    1. Click “Continue” or “Install” as appropriate, to advance through the screens
    2. Provide an administrative username and password to the local computer, when prompted
  6. When you are ready to print a file, choose the printer labeled, “Nursing”.
  7. Go to the printer release station to release your documents and pay for them.
