Student Spotlight

March 2008

Name: Shane Grant
Class: Senior II

Shane Grant is a non-traditional student that came to nursing school with a strong desire to serve the community. He was a 15-year veteran volunteer firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician, which spawned his interest in the nursing profession. Shane’s decision to change careers was not taken lightly as evident by the statement, “If it’s worth doing, then it’s worth doing right”.

Upon entering LSUHSC School of Nursing, Shane’s self-sacrificing manner was apparent to his fellow nursing students. He went beyond the call of duty as the Student Government President to help incoming students ease the transition into LSUHSC School of Nursing.

Further, Shane demonstrates qualities that every nurse should possess such as compassion, nobility, honesty, and trustworthiness. Shane’s leadership qualities are apparent through his involvement in several student organizations and school of nursing committees such as Student Government Association, Student Nurses Association, American Assembly for Men in Nursing, Student Tech Fee Committee, Student Technology Committee, and Student Interest Committee. He is currently the Executive President of the Student Government Association of LSUHSC School of Nursing and the Vice President of the Senior II class.

In the past, he held positions at the Louisiana State Nurses Association as the Region IV Director and was the Parliamentarian on the Student Government Executive Council. Shane continuously volunteers and tries to advocate for the citizens within the struggling New Orleans community. Examples of his various activities are the YMCA “Trim Kids”, “Step Out to Fight Diabetes,” March of Dimes “Walk for a Cure,” blood drives, and Dr. Seuss B-Day. Shane was also nominated as the king by fellow classmates for the SGA Nightingale Ball based on his strong admiration for the nursing profession. Shane leads by example not only as a student and leader in LSUHSC School of Nursing but also within the community.
