Student Spotlight

March 2008

Name: Jamie Byrd
Class: Senior II

Jamie Byrd always enjoys being a team player. She worked as a pediatric dental assistant for two and a half years before beginning nursing school. It was a very rewarding experience. She was married in December of 2004. Jamie began her nursing career as a student in January of 2005.

As a sophomore at the LSUHSC School of Nursing, Jamie immediately joined the Student Nurses Association and began volunteering for community service events including the Leukemia Regatta, Children’s World Fair and Second Harvester’s Food Bank.

However, life changed quite drastically in the months following Hurricane Katrina. As a result, Jamie had to focus on school and family, making it difficult to volunteer in the community.

As a junior nursing student, life began to settle down again and she was able to become more active in school. Jamie received the Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship and was elected as her class Student Government Association alternate representative. She aspired to follow in the footsteps of several student leaders and made a vow to take part in the leadership arena.

Jamie strived to be a role model and mentor for nursing students in her senior year. She volunteered in the Student Nurses Association events including the Leukemia Regatta, Light the Night, Great 100 Nurses Celebration, Boo at the Zoo, and University of New Orleans – Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN) Recruitment. She also attended the Louisiana Association of Student Nurses (LASN) Annual Convention in New Orleans, where she was elected to the Breakthrough to Nursing/Membership Director position for a full year term.

Jamie currently serves as the Student Government Association (SGA) secretary, SNA Breakthrough to Nursing Recruiter, LASN Breakthrough to Nursing/Membership Director and LASN Project-in-Touch Recruiter. She attended the NSNA Midyear Convention in Kansas City, Missouri and the NSNA Annual Convention in Grapevine, Texas. Recent community service events involved the Upward Bound’s Health Fair, Blood Drive and LSU – BTN Recruitment. She is an active member in all endeavors and organizations. Jamie has also been invited to serve on the LSUHSC Alumni Board of Directors following graduation from the School of Nursing. .
