Bio
Julia Makitra-Bourgeois is a masters prepared family nurse practitioner serving as clinical instructor of nursing at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing-New Orleans. She specializes in aesthetic medicine, cardiology, hospice and palliative care, and family practice. She has spent most of her career in clinical practice both in a community health setting, and hospital-outpatient setting.
Julia completed her Associates degree in Nursing in 2014 through Corning Community College, and went on to complete her Masters of Science degree-Nursing with a focus on Family Nurse Practitioner in 2024, through Simmons University in Boston, MA.
During her time at Simmons, Julia was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She is also a member of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and holds an additional certification in aesthetic medicine for neuromodulator injections.
Julia helped start the first transitional heart failure clinic on the west bank in Louisiana and has helped grow and develop several hospice organizations in the state as a clinical care manager, director, and assistant director of nursing. She also currently serves as the elected Regional Representative of the Greater New Orleans region with the Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners. Although different from clinical practice, these experiences have given her valuable lessons, and a strong background in effective leadership and business management.
When she is not fulfilling her professional responsibilities, Julia enjoys spending time with her husband Tommy, and their rescue dogs and chickens. She enjoys traveling to New England and upstate New York to see her family, and any time she can get at the beach or on the Finger Lakes. When not teaching class, you can find her gardening, relaxing outside, listening to music, or trying to rescue another dog.
