Attaching a Disposable to a Patient

Before attaching the disposable it is important that you explain to your patient what you are doing and why. For example:

“I am going to put this plastic tube under your nose to monitor your breathing. By monitoring your breath each time you breath out, we know if your breathing is slowing down. The medication you are receiving (and/or your conditions) can affect your breathing rate. It doesn’t happen often, but I want to be safe and monitor your breathing rate.”
