Essentials of Legal Nursing, Theory and Practice”

Online Course

“Essentials of Legal Nursing, Theory & Practice” is structured to educate nurses who are exploring entry into the exciting and growing field of legal nurse consulting as well as LNCs who are already in practice and want to increase the level of excellence in their work product. The fully online course is authored by an LSU nurse faculty member with extensive legal nursing experience working with nationally and internationally recognized attorneys. The role of the registered nurse in a legal setting will be examined; topics will address theory and practice of legal nurse consulting. The course as a whole will allow students to synthesize aspects of LNC practice by creating attorney client work product and assist in developing a business plan. This course focuses on the perspective of the nurse in legal settings and delves into why nurses are unique and key members of the litigation team. Upon completion of the course, RNs will receive a certificate of completion from LSUHNO, School of Nursing.

Course description: A series of ten modules to be completed by students in a self-paced online format. Each Module provides 10.0 Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) hours, with NCPDs awarded following completion and submission of each module evaluation. Individual module objectives will be met with successful completion of evaluation assignments. In addition to NCPDs, students who complete the full ten modules will receive a certificate of completion by LSUHNO.

Online Modules

A series of ten modules to be completed by students in a self-paced online format. Online modules include but not limited to a presentation of the materials, reading assignments and a written assignment that mimics work that the LNC would be asked to do proficiently once performing in that role.

Faculty will provide individualized feedback to each participant on their written work. Assignments are designed to be included in the LNC's professional portfolio as well as to enhance the learning of content.

You may Register and begin at any time. It is strongly suggested if you are new to LNC that you begin with Module 1 and complete all 10 Modules in order. Individual module objectives will be met with successful completion of assignments and evaluation. Each Module provides 10.0 NCPD hours, with NCPDs awarded following completion and submission of each module assignments and evaluation.

Preceptorship: Upon completion of Module 10, students are invited to participate in a two day preceptorship. Students will shadow a Legal Nurse Consultant working in an in-house setting in a large law firm located in New Orleans, LA. Students will observe and experience LNC worklife and interact with attorneys at the law firm. This excellent opportunity will give students the chance to see Module teachings applied in actual LNC practice.

Course Developer and Faculty: Lori Lukinovich, MSN RN LNCC. Ms. Lukinovich has over ten years' experience as a legal nurse consultant (LNC) working directly with attorneys who are nationally and internationally recognized in their fields. In addition to her legal consultant practice Ms. Lukinovich is Adjunct Faculty at LSUHNO SON.
