Philosophy

Consistent with the beliefs expressed in the philosophy of the School of Nursing, the Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioner (PCFNP) Concentration faculty believe:

Family nurse practitioner practice is concerned with health promotion, the prevention and management of disease states as well as relieving suffering in individuals across the lifespan. The PCFNP faculty believe the purpose of nursing is to empower individuals, families, groups and communities to achieve their highest levels of self-care competence.

Advanced practice nursing accomplishes these goals through a blend of health care services, advanced clinical expertise and holistic caring practices. The PCFNP faculty believes that advanced practice nursing care addresses the human environments that impact individuals' responses to illness and health care along with respect and sensitivity to diversity and cultural influences. Advanced practice nursing integrates inteprofessional collaboration with expert nursing skills to promote wellness and healing within a caring environment and a health care system that facilitates care for all citizens and especially underserved populations.

The School of Nursing's six Core Values guide the PCFNP faculty's teaching and practice: Caring, Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence. The curricula are designed to prepare the masters and Doctor of Nursing Practice students to meet the professional standards that define the role of the family nurse practitioner.
