Infusing at Flow Rates < 1.0 mL/h

Infusions that are programmed to infuse at fractional flow rates may encounter a delay upon startup. This delay can occur because of syringe stiction (stickiness between the stopper and internal barrel), low flow rates, an improperly primed set, the height of the device not level with the patient, and when the mechanical components of the device may not be fully engaged. To decrease startup delays when infusing at flow rates less than 1.0 mL/h:

• Enable Fast Start (with Guardrails® Editor data set development of system configurations per profile) and use set with pressure sensing disc.
• Use smallest syringe size possible. For example, if infusing 7.2 mL of fluid, use a 10mL syringe.
• Properly prime administration set so that pressure sensing disc is not over- or under-filled.
• Ensure device is as close to level of patient as possible.
• Prime Alaris® Syringe module as well as administration set to speed up the engagement of the mechanical components of the device and decrease possible syringe stickiness.
