Philosophy

The Nursing Anesthesia Program faculty believe:

Individuals are unique and complex systems. Individuals have the right to dignity and self determination. Nurse Anesthetists act as patient advocates during the perioperative period through the development of collaborative patient relationships and implementation of critical thinking / clinical problem solving skills derived from a physiological and pharmacological scientific knowledge base.

Learning is contextual, a dynamic process involving the learner and his/her environment. To foster learning, learning environments should contain real world cues, maintain student dignity, and provide active learning strategies to engage the learner. Knowledge acquisition is enhanced when material is organized from simple to complex. The faculty role is to mentor learners as they become increasingly self-directed and autonomous.
