Overview
The Clinical Nurse Educator Academy is a professional development program designed to prepare practicing registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice RNs (APRNs) as clinical faculty and preceptors. The Clinical Nurse Educator Academy will serve nurses from Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region 6).
The National League for Nursing (NLN) defines a clinical nurse educator as one who:
- Is responsible for facilitating learning primarily in a clinical setting;
- Reports to an academic program of nursing education; and
- Has input into the assessments of the learner's clinical performance (NLN, 2018).
The Clinical Nurse Educator Academy refers to clinical faculty (hired and staffed by an academic nursing program) and preceptors (hired and staffed by a clinical agency) as clinical nurse educators.
Purpose
The project aims to expand academic practice partnerships (APPs) within rural and underserved areas for the Clinical Nurse Educator Academy and increase clinical nurse educators to serve as clinical faculty or clinical preceptors for the region. The purpose of the Clinical Nurse Educator Academy is to increase the registered nurse (RN) and advanced practice RN (APRN) nursing workforce as skilled and qualified academic clinical faculty and/or clinical preceptors focused on the development and support of nursing students and transitioning nurses into practice within rural and underserved areas across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 6.
Goals
The Clinical Nurse Educator Academy will achieve the following goals.
- Increase the nursing workforce by recruiting, training, and producing skilled qualified clinical nursing faculty and preceptors, by:
- Increasing the number of academic practice partnerships (APPs) to create a network of entities that can enable the recruitment and education of a diverse group of CNEs within the rural and/or medically underserved areas (MUAs) of HHS Region 6;
- Developing a Clinical Nurse Educator Academy for HHS Region 6; and
- Increasing the number of clinical nursing educators within rural or MUAs (retention).
- Prepare nurses to serve as clinical nursing faculty and preceptors to newly hired or transitioning licensed nurses in a variety of care settings in rural or underserved areas, by:
- Increasing the knowledge and skills of RN and APRN CNEs to support the development of students and nurses transitioning into the nursing workforce.
