Nursing Continuing Professional Development (Continuing Nursing Education)

Nursing Continuing Professional Development is an integral part of the mission of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing. The philosophy of the School of Nursing supports the concept of continued learning through a commitment to provide instruction and service for Louisiana nurses. The changing roles and functions of the nurse within the health care system mandate the need for continued education and professional development to maintain currency in practice. The LSUHNO SON Nursing Continuing Professional Development Department is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development through the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
Our mission as an ANCC accredited provider of nursing continuing professional development is to advance the professional growth and clinical excellence of registered nurses by disseminating new knowledge through high-quality, evidence-based educational programs. We serve a diverse community of learners across healthcare settings and design learner-centered activities aligned with current standards, emerging trends, and the evolving needs of the nursing workforce. Through our commitment to lifelong learning, we empower nurses to enhance clinical competence, improve patient outcomes, and positively impact the health and well-being of the populations they serve.
Nursing Continuing Professional Development Contact Hours
Terminology Update: Per American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) guidelines, what were formerly referred to as continuing nursing education contact hours are now nursing continuing professional development contact hours.
What does that mean to me?
- This is the same quality continuing nursing education we have always provided. It's just a change in terminology. These contact hours are valid to meet eligibility requirements for certification, re-certification, licensure, etc.
- 1.0 contact hour is equal to 60 minutes of educational content (ANCC measures in minutes, but awards credit in the form of contact hours).
Joint-Provider Opportunities
As we are a nationally accredited NCPD provider, we work in partnership with many health care organizations to joint-provide nursing continuing professional development programs. If you or your organization is interested in working with our Nurse Planners to plan, develop, and implement a continuing education program, please contact our office by email at nsgconted@lsuhsc.edu for more information.
